The New Testament generally portrays Peter acting either in his calling as an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ or as president of the Church The Gospels and the book of Acts, though, include several incidents from Peter’s life in which he personally provided compassionate service to those in need This paper will review those individualized acts of service and compassion, such as inviting Christ into his home so that his mother-in-law could be healed in Matthew 8:14-15, healing a lame man at the temple in Acts 3:1-11 (“silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give unto thee…”), the healing of Æneas in Acts 9:32-34 (“arise, and make thy bed”), and raising Dorcas/Tabitha from death in Acts 9:36-42 (“Tabitha arise”) After considering the examples of personal compassionate service shown by Peter, this paper will share similar instances of personal ministry and compassionate service from latter-day prophets—from Joseph Smith to Thomas S Monson. (Of course, this has never happened to you) These are the students whose course reading assignments remain partially or completely unread Their homework is incomplete or not even started, and their course assignments have been finished sloppily or completely ignored This presentation will share an assortment of ideas, based on effective course design principles and teaching experience in a wide variety of classroom settings (from the humanities to engineering courses) to help you provide: (1) learning opportunities for students who have chosen to be unprepared, and (2) motivation for your students to be prepared for future lessons And we hope to have some fun while doing so! Please join us" . June, 2013.
  • Alford KL. Saving Utah from Itself: The Grand Army of the Republic's Anti-Polygamy Campaign. 2013 Civil War and Reconstruction Conference. This presentation tells the story of the campaign by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) to eradicate polygamy The GAR was an influential and powerful Civil War veterans organization (for Union veterans only) The clash between the GAR and Mormons in Utah Territory simmered after the Civil War but reached a climax during the 1880s when numerous merchants and civic leaders in Salt Lake City decided to fly American flags across the city at half-staff The gesture was intended as a mild protest meant to call attention to the fact that, from their perspective, the federal government for many years had been unduly persecuting and prosecuting Mormons for attempting to live their religion GAR members, both in and outside of Utah, however, viewed the lowered flags as the height of disrespect and disloyalty, and they vowed to do whatever they could to eradicate polygamy and teach Utahns to respect the American flag The following summer Salt Lake City turned into a verbal battleground Even after the LDS Church publically discontinued polygamy in 1890, the conflict between the GAR and Mormonism continued as Mormon Civil War veterans from Utah were denied GAR membership--a “fight” that was not ultimately resolved until 1911 (by which time many of the affected veterans were dead) This presentation uses contemporary newspaper accounts, pronouncements of LDS Church leaders as well as GAR speeches, records, and histories to help reconstruct this peaceful, but profound and extended, clash of cultures and views. March, 2013.
